We will be meeting on March 6 (4-5PM PST, on zoom) to discuss historian Melissa Macauley’s book Distant Shores: Colonial Encounters on China’s Maritime Frontier (Princeton, 2020), and her 2016 essay in the American Historical Review, titled “Entangled States: The Translocal Repercussions of Rural Pacification in China, 1869-1873.” Please read the essay and skim through as much of the book as possible. All are welcome!
